The late 1960's up through the mid 1970's was a renaissance period for the Puerto Rican community of New York City. This period saw the birth of a number of critical movements that, in spite of their global impact, have largely gone unexplored or reimagined. The soundtrack to that era was undoubtedly salsa, a genre and culture birthed in New York City. This exhibition pays homage to the visual language used in record designs, posters, and other cultural artifacts developed during Salsa's golden era. Chevére features artwork by Adrian "Viajero" Roman and Christian Mártir.

Fiesta Santera

Designed by Christian Mártir as part of the Chévere show at Ace Hotel New York. The design is inspired by the spiritual awakening that took place during the time period often referred to as the golden era of salsa. In particular, an awakening that re-connected the community with it's African roots.

Yo! Bumrush the Show

Designed by Christian Mártir as part of the Chévere show at Ace Hotel New York. The design pays homage to the historic performance by the Fania All Stars at Yankee Stadium in 1973. The show had to be cut short because the audience, caught up in the emotion of the evening, rushed the stage during a hypnotic performance of "Coco Bongo".

Your Titi used to party at The Cheetah

Designed by Christian Mártir as part of the Chévere show at Ace Hotel New York. The design pays homage to all the venues which house some of salsa's golden age's most iconic moments.

Designed by Christian Mártir as part of the Chévere show at Ace Hotel New York. The design pays homage to the Young Lords who, besides besides being revolutionaries, were part of the salsa generation and would inspire and befriend many artists such as Eddie Palmieri and Ray Barretto.
